Cary Funk is a social researcher who uses quantitative surveys and qualitative methods to drive insights about people’s attitudes, beliefs and behaviors. She is past director of research on science and society at the Pew Research Center where she led the strategic planning, design, and execution of research on the social, ethical, and policy implications of science for society.

She frequently speaks on topics such as public trust in scientists, views of vaccines and the coronavirus outbreak, climate, extreme weather, and energy issues, as well as emerging developments in science and technology such as artificial intelligence.

Cary has deep expertise in the use of survey research, focus groups, and experimental design. Her work covers a wide range of topics including engagement with climate and energy issues, factors driving the composition of the STEM workforce, and how people make sense of emerging uses of artificial intelligence, neuroscience and other developments in science and technology.
